White's tree frogs — nicknamed 'dumpy tree frogs' for their famously chubby appearance — are the rare frog that genuinely tolerates gentle handling and can live 15–20 years. This guide covers everything you need to know to keep them healthy, including the truth about those iconic fat folds.
Lifespan
15–20 years in captivity
Origin
Australia and southern New Guinea
Tank Size
20-gallon tall (18x18x24 inches) minimum for one adult; 30-gallon tall or larger for a pair
Substrate
Coconut coir or bioactive mix (topsoil + coco coir + sphagnum moss); paper towels for quarantine. Avoid gravel, sand, or bark chips — impaction and chemical risk.
Lighting
Low-level UVB (5.0 / T5 HO 6%) recommended — emerging research strongly supports UVB for amphibian health and vitamin D3 synthesis. 12-hour light/dark cycle on a timer. UVB output degrades every 6–12 months; replace on schedule even if bulb still glows.
Temperature
Basking
85–88°F (29–31°C) — optional warm spot provided by a low-wattage basking bulb or heat panel
Cool Side
72–75°F (22–24°C)
Night
65–75°F (18–24°C) — can tolerate brief dips to 60°F
Humidity: 50–80% with daily fluctuation
Mist one side of the enclosure nightly; allow the other side to partially dry. Constant 80%+ humidity without airflow causes bacterial and fungal skin infections. Cycle is key — wet at night, drier by midday.
Diet Type
Insectivore — gut-loaded live insects are the entire diet. White's tree frogs do not eat commercial pellets or fruit.
Schedule
Adults: every 2–3 days. Juveniles (under 6 months): daily or every other day. Feed in the evening when frogs are naturally active.
Supplements
Dust every feeding with calcium (without D3 if using UVB; with D3 if no UVB). Dust with a multivitamin supplement every 2 weeks. Gut-load insects 24–48 hours before feeding with collard greens, sweet potato, or commercial gut-load.

Yes — White's tree frogs are one of the very few frog species that genuinely tolerate handling. But 'tolerate' is the key word: they don't seek it out. Always wash your hands with unscented soap and rinse thoroughly, then wet them before picking up your frog — frog skin absorbs chemicals directly, so soap residue, hand lotion, or dry skin can cause chemical burns or toxicity. Keep sessions to 10–15 minutes and return the frog if it becomes restless. Never handle immediately after eating.
