Uromastyx Resource Hub

Complete uromastyx care guide covering their plant-based diet, extreme basking temps, species selection, bone-dry humidity, and 15-30 year lifespan.

Lifespan

15-30 years

Origin

North Africa, Middle East, South Asia (Saharan desert regions)

Habitat & Setup

Tank Size

4x2x2 feet minimum for large species (Mali, Egyptian) — smaller species can use 4x2x18 inches

Substrate

2-4 inches of washed play sand, sand/soil mix, or excavator clay; compacted firmly to allow digging

Lighting

T5 HO 12.0 or 14% UVB spanning 50-66% of enclosure; halogen flood bulb for basking; 12-14hr light cycle in summer, 10hr in winter

Temperature

Basking

120-130°F surface temperature

Cool Side

80-85°F

Night

65-75°F (significant drop is natural and healthy)

Humidity: 10-35%

Bone dry — uromastyx are extremely sensitive to high humidity. No misting, no humid hides, no damp substrate. Humidity above 40% risks respiratory infections and tail rot.

Diet & Feeding

Diet Type

Herbivore

Schedule

Daily fresh greens and seed mix; remove uneaten food each evening

Supplements

Calcium without D3 dusted on greens 2-3x/week (strong UVB provides D3); multivitamin 1x/week

Recommended Gear

Habitat Gear

Zen Habitats 4x2x2 PVC Reptile Enclosure
View on Amazon

PVC retains heat far better than glass — critical for maintaining 120-130°F basking spots without running massive wattage bulbs

Lighting

Arcadia Desert 14% T5 HO UVB Bulb
View on Amazon

Desert-strength UVB output essential for uromastyx calcium metabolism and D3 synthesis — stronger than the 10.0 bulbs used for tropical species

Heating

Philips 90W PAR38 Halogen Flood Light
View on Amazon

Halogen flood bulbs produce intense focused heat needed for 120-130°F basking surfaces — far more effective and efficient than ceramic reptile basking bulbs

Monitoring

Etekcity Infrared Temperature Gun
View on Amazon

Non-negotiable for measuring basking surface temperatures — ambient thermometers cannot read the 120-130°F surface temps uromastyx require

Digital Thermometer Hygrometer Combo
View on Amazon

Monitor both temperature gradient and humidity levels — for uromastyx you want to confirm humidity stays below 35%

Feeding

Rep-Cal Calcium Without D3 Powder
View on Amazon

Calcium without D3 is preferred for uromastyx since their strong UVB lighting provides natural D3 synthesis — reduces risk of D3 overdose

Frequently Asked Questions

Uromastyx are intermediate-level reptiles. Their care is straightforward once the enclosure is set up correctly — the plant-based diet is actually simpler than managing live insects. The main challenge is providing extreme basking heat (120-130°F surface temps) and keeping humidity bone dry (10-35%). If you can nail the heat and keep things dry, daily care is easy: fresh greens, seed mix, water dish check, done.
