Detailed Reviews

1. Zen Habitats 4x2x2 PVC Enclosure

Best Overall

Zen Habitats 4x2x2 PVC Enclosure

Pros

  • PVC panels retain heat dramatically better than glass — lower heating costs
  • 48"×24" floor space far exceeds minimum requirements
  • Tool-free assembly — no tools or hardware needed
  • 3-year manufacturer warranty and strong customer support

Cons

  • Opaque PVC walls reduce side visibility compared to glass
  • Higher upfront cost than glass alternatives
  • Larger footprint requires dedicated shelf or stand

Bottom Line

The Zen Habitats 4x2x2 PVC Enclosure is the top recommendation for leopard gecko keepers who want the best long-term setup. Its PVC panel construction retains heat up to 10x more efficiently than glass, which means your under-tank heater or heat mat works less to maintain the 88-90°F warm side your gecko needs. The 48"×24" floor footprint exceeds every minimum size recommendation, giving your leopard gecko a proper temperature gradient from hot to cool. Tool-free panel assembly means most keepers can have it built in under 30 minutes, and the 3-year warranty backs it up. Front-opening sliding doors eliminate the overhead-access stress that top-opening tanks create. If you're buying one enclosure for life, this is it.

2. REPTI ZOO 67-Gallon Reptile Terrarium

Best Glass Enclosure

REPTI ZOO 67-Gallon Reptile Terrarium

Pros

  • Dual front-opening doors — no overhead stress during feeding and maintenance
  • Raised bottom frame perfectly accommodates under-tank heaters
  • Waterproof bottom protects against humid hide moisture
  • Strong ventilation with stainless steel mesh top

Cons

  • Glass transfers heat less efficiently than PVC — heating costs slightly higher

3. Exo Terra 36x18x18 Glass Terrarium

Budget Glass Pick

Exo Terra 36x18x18 Glass Terrarium

Pros

  • Widely available at pet stores — no online-only sourcing required
  • Waterproof bottom tray with substrate barrier — ideal for loose substrate
  • Lock-on screen top accepts standard accessories

6. Carolina Custom Cages 36x18x18

Upgrade Glass Pick

Carolina Custom Cages 36x18x18

Pros

  • Tempered glass panels — more durable than standard enclosure glass
  • Custom sizing available direct from manufacturer
  • Swing-open front doors with secure locking mechanism
  • Modular accessory ecosystem from Carolina Custom Cages

Cons

  • Higher price than Exo Terra for comparable glass dimensions
  • Fewer retail stockists — typically a direct-order product
  • Swing doors require slightly more clearance space in front of the enclosure

Bottom Line

The Carolina Custom Cages 36x18x18 is a tempered glass upgrade over standard glass enclosures, offering swing-open front doors and a modular design that pairs well with Carolina Custom's accessory ecosystem. The tempered glass panels are stronger than the glass used in standard Exo Terra or REPTI ZOO builds, which matters for keepers who have experienced cracked glass during transport or cage rearrangement. Custom sizing is available direct from Carolina Custom Cages, making this the best option if the standard dimensions don't fit your shelf or rack. The price sits between budget glass and PVC options.

Detailed Reviews

Zen Habitats 4x2x2 PVC Enclosure

The Zen Habitats 4x2x2 PVC Enclosure is the single best enclosure for most leopard gecko keepers. It does everything right: massive floor space, superior heat retention, tool-free assembly, and a 3-year warranty that signals the manufacturer stands behind the build.

Leopard geckos are terrestrial. They don't climb walls or hang from the ceiling. Floor space is what matters, and the 48"×24" footprint of this enclosure is the largest available at this price range. Your gecko has room for a full temperature gradient — hot side at 88-90°F, cool side at 75-80°F — with comfortable transition zones between them.

The PVC walls are the key functional advantage. PVC retains heat significantly better than glass, which means your heating equipment runs less frequently and your gecko experiences more stable temperatures throughout the day and night.

Pro Tip: The Zen Habitats 4x2x2 pairs perfectly with a bioactive substrate setup. The sealed PVC floor prevents water damage from the humid hide zone, and the 24" depth gives cleanup crews plenty of territory to work.

REPTI ZOO 67-Gallon Reptile Terrarium

The REPTI ZOO 67-Gallon Reptile Terrarium is the best glass enclosure on this list and the top recommendation for keepers who want side visibility. Glass enclosures let you observe your gecko's natural behaviors — hunting, exploring, thermoregulating — in a way opaque PVC panels cannot match.

At 36"×18"×24", it meets ReptiFiles' minimum size recommendation for adult leopard geckos. The dual front-opening doors swing outward, not upward, eliminating the overhead access that triggers stress responses in leopard geckos (a terrestrial species that evolved predators approaching from above).

The raised bottom frame is a practical design detail: it creates the exact gap needed to slide an under-tank heater or heat mat beneath the enclosure. This is the most efficient heating method for a species that thermoregulates from belly contact with warm substrate.

Pro Tip: Pair the REPTI ZOO 67-Gallon Reptile Terrarium with a quality reptile hygrometer mounted inside. Glass enclosures in dry climates can lose humidity faster than PVC — monitoring is critical for the humid hide zone your gecko needs for healthy shedding.

Exo Terra 36x18x18 Glass Terrarium

The Exo Terra 36x18x18 Glass Terrarium is the most widely available leopard gecko enclosure in the hobby. If you need an enclosure today and can only shop locally, this is what your nearest pet store likely stocks.

It meets the adult minimum at 36"×18"×18". The dual front-opening doors and waterproof bottom tray are exactly right for the job. The lock-on screen top accepts thermometer probes, lighting fixtures, and misting nozzles without modification.

The one limitation is the 18" height, which is fine for leopard geckos (a terrestrial species), but leaves less vertical space for hides and decoration compared to the REPTI ZOO's 24" height. For most keepers, this is not a meaningful constraint — leopard geckos live at floor level.

If you want to build a bioactive leopard gecko setup, the Exo Terra's substrate barrier keeps loose substrate contained while the waterproof tray protects the surface beneath.

Dubia.com 4x2x2 PVC Enclosure

The Dubia.com 4x2x2 PVC Enclosure occupies a specific niche: keepers who want PVC quality at a lower price than Zen Habitats, particularly those building multi-gecko rooms.

The stackable design is the standout feature. These enclosures are engineered to interlock on rack systems, making them ideal for breeders or keepers with 3+ leopard geckos who need a space-efficient setup. The PVC construction delivers the same heat retention advantages as the Zen Habitats model — your heating equipment works less, your gecko's temperature gradient stays stable.

Community data shows keepers who choose the Dubia.com 4x2x2 PVC Enclosure over Zen Habitats typically do so for one of two reasons: price savings or the stackable design. Both are legitimate reasons.

Vision Model 332 Reptile Cage

The Vision Model 332 Reptile Cage is not designed to look beautiful on a living room shelf. It's designed to function flawlessly in a reptile room where hygiene, temperature stability, and long-term durability are the only metrics that matter.

Zoos and professional breeders use Vision cages because the one-piece thermoformed body has no seams, joints, or corners where bacteria accumulate. You can bleach the interior and have it fully sanitized in minutes — something impossible with any glass enclosure that has a substrate barrier, screen top connections, and hinged doors.

For hobbyists who breed leopard geckos, the Vision 332 is the professional standard. For display setups in a living space, the Zen Habitats or REPTI ZOO will serve better.

Carolina Custom Cages 36x18x18

The Carolina Custom Cages 36x18x18 sits between standard glass and premium PVC in the market. Its primary advantage over Exo Terra and REPTI ZOO is the tempered glass construction — significantly stronger than the standard glass panels used by most enclosure manufacturers.

Custom sizing is the second advantage. If your shelf, rack, or room layout doesn't accommodate standard dimensions, Carolina Custom Cages will build to specification. This matters more than it sounds: a properly sized enclosure that fits your space is always better than a slightly-too-large standard size that gets placed suboptimally.

At this price point, it competes directly with the REPTI ZOO 67-Gallon Reptile Terrarium. If visibility and glass construction are priorities but you want more durability than REPTI ZOO's standard glass, the Carolina Custom Cages 36x18x18 is the natural upgrade.

PVC vs Glass: Which Should You Choose?

This is the most common question among leopard gecko keepers shopping for their first (or upgraded) enclosure. Here's the honest comparison:

Glass Enclosures

Advantages:

  • Full visibility on all sides — watch your gecko live naturally
  • Available at pet stores — immediate sourcing, easy returns
  • Lower upfront cost
  • Widely documented setup guides and community experience

Disadvantages:

  • Heat escapes through glass faster than PVC — higher heating costs
  • Temperature gradients harder to maintain in cold rooms
  • Heavier — more difficult to move once set up

Best for: Keepers who prioritize observation and want to buy locally

PVC Enclosures

Advantages:

  • Heat retention is dramatically superior — lower energy costs, more stable temperatures
  • Lighter than equivalent glass enclosures
  • Better for challenging heating environments (cold rooms, winter)
  • Stackable designs available for multi-gecko keepers

Disadvantages:

  • Opaque walls — limited to front-panel visibility only
  • Higher upfront cost
  • Online-only sourcing — no local pet store availability
  • No returns after assembly in most cases

Best for: Keepers who prioritize temperature stability, multi-gecko rooms, or live in cold climates

The Verdict

For most keepers in temperate climates with stable indoor temperatures, either choice works. The REPTI ZOO 67-Gallon Reptile Terrarium and Zen Habitats 4x2x2 PVC Enclosure both create excellent leopard gecko environments — the difference is primarily visibility versus heat efficiency.

In cold climates (rooms below 68°F in winter), PVC is the clear winner. The heat retention difference becomes significant when ambient temperatures are low.

Size Guide: How Big Does a Leopard Gecko Enclosure Need to Be?

Size recommendations have changed significantly in recent years. The old "20-gallon is fine" advice is outdated.

Important: We always recommend housing leopard geckos individually. Cohabitation causes chronic stress and can lead to fighting, tail loss, and suppressed feeding — even between females.

Why 20-Gallon Is Too Small for Adults

A 20-gallon aquarium (30"×12") gives an adult leopard gecko roughly 360 square inches of floor space. At the minimum, a leopard gecko needs a temperature gradient of at least 15°F from warm side to cool side. In a 30" enclosure, that gradient compresses into a narrow band — your gecko either bakes on the warm side or stays too cool on the other.

The 36"×18" minimum creates 648 square inches of floor space — nearly double — with enough length to establish a true gradient. The 48"×24" ideal provides 1,152 square inches.

Floor space matters more than height for this terrestrial species. A tall, narrow enclosure is less useful than a wide, low one. When comparing enclosures, multiply length by width — height is secondary for leopard geckos.

The Three-Hide Rule

Regardless of which enclosure you choose, leopard geckos need at least three hides:

  1. Warm hide — directly over or adjacent to the heat source, 88-90°F floor temperature
  2. Cool hide — opposite end of the enclosure, 75-80°F ambient
  3. Humid hide — mid-enclosure, packed with damp sphagnum moss, 70-80% humidity for shedding

All three hides must fit comfortably in your enclosure with space to move between them. This is another reason why larger enclosures are strongly preferred.

Setting Up the Temperature Gradient

Leopard geckos are ectotherms — they regulate body temperature by moving between warm and cool zones. A proper temperature gradient is not optional; it's the foundation of healthy husbandry.

Target temperatures:

  • Warm side floor: 88-90°F (measured with a temperature gun directly on the substrate surface)
  • Warm side ambient: 80-84°F
  • Cool side ambient: 75-80°F
  • Nighttime drop: 65-70°F is acceptable

The most efficient heating for leopard geckos is an under-tank heater (UTH) or heat mat on the warm side, connected to a thermostat that prevents overheating. Our leopard gecko heating guide covers thermostats, heat mats, and overhead halogen bulbs in detail.

For light-producing heat sources, our halogen light guide covers the best options that double as a photoperiod light source without producing UVB interference with your UVB setup.
