Can Crested Geckos Eat Figs? Safety, Prep & Frequency

Safe — OccasionallyFeeding frequency: monthly

Fresh figs are non-toxic to crested geckos and carry a favorable calcium-to-phosphorus ratio (~2.5:1), making them a nutritionally acceptable treat. Because figs are high in natural sugars, they should be offered no more than once or twice a month to prevent obesity and digestive upset.

How to Prepare

  1. Select a ripe, unblemished fresh fig — never dried, canned, or preserved figs, which contain concentrated sugar and often added preservatives.
  2. Rinse thoroughly under cool running water to remove pesticide residue, then peel the skin if the gecko is under 25 g or a juvenile, as the tough skin can be hard to chew.
  3. Cut the flesh into pieces no larger than the width of the gecko's head (roughly 0.5 cm cubes) to prevent choking, and place directly in a shallow feeding dish — remove any uneaten fruit within two hours to avoid mold and bacterial growth.

FAQ

Are figs toxic to crested geckos?
No. Fresh figs contain no compounds toxic to crested geckos. The calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of approximately 2.5:1 is actually better than many popular fruits such as mango or banana, which tip heavily phosphorus-dominant. The main limitation is sugar content, not toxicity.
Can crested geckos eat dried figs or fig jam?
No. Dried figs have three times the sugar of fresh figs per gram, and fig jam adds refined sugar on top of that. Both forms can cause rapid blood sugar spikes, digestive upset, and, with repeated exposure, contribute to metabolic dysfunction. Stick exclusively to fresh, ripe fruit.
How much fig can I give at one time?
One or two small cubes (0.5 cm each) per feeding session is sufficient for an adult crested gecko. That translates to roughly 1–2 g of fig flesh. Juveniles under 15 g should receive half that amount or skip figs entirely until they are fully established on a complete CGD.
Do figs provide meaningful nutrition for crested geckos?
Figs contribute trace calcium, potassium, and vitamin B6, but the quantities in a treat-sized serving are negligible relative to a properly supplemented CGD powder. Think of figs as enrichment and palatability variety rather than a nutritional cornerstone. The Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians (ARAV) emphasizes that no single whole food should be relied upon to meet micronutrient needs in captive frugivorous lizards.
What fruits are better staple options alongside figs as treats?
Lower-sugar fruits with favorable Ca:P ratios — such as papaya (~1.9:1) and guava (~1.3:1) — are commonly cited as more diet-compatible rotation fruits. Figs slot in well as a monthly variety item within a broader fruit rotation. See the full breakdown in the crested-gecko-fruits guide linked below.
