Can Crested Geckos Eat Apples? Safety, Prep & Frequency

Safe — OccasionallyFeeding frequency: special-treat

Apples are non-toxic to crested geckos and safe as a rare treat, but their inverted calcium-to-phosphorus ratio (~0.5:1) and high sugar content (~10 g/100 g) disqualify them from regular rotation. Offer a few small pieces once or twice a month at most, always alongside a balanced commercial CGD paste.

How to Prepare

  1. Choose organic apples where possible to reduce pesticide load; regardless of source, scrub the skin under cold running water before handling.
  2. Peel the apple entirely — the skin concentrates pesticide residues and the commercial wax coating is difficult for reptiles to digest.
  3. Remove all seeds and the core completely; apple seeds contain amygdalin, a cyanogenic glycoside that can release hydrogen cyanide during digestion — even small cumulative exposure is an avoidable risk.
  4. Cut the peeled flesh into 2–3 mm cubes or mash lightly with a fork; crested geckos have small mouths and chunks larger than their eye width pose a choking risk.
  5. Top-dress a small amount (1–2 tsp maximum) onto the gecko's regular CGD paste rather than offering apple as a standalone food; this preserves nutritional balance and limits sugar intake.

FAQ

Are apple seeds poisonous to crested geckos?
Yes, apple seeds contain amygdalin, a naturally occurring cyanogenic glycoside. When metabolized, amygdalin can release small amounts of hydrogen cyanide. A single seed is unlikely to cause acute death in an adult gecko, but there is no safe threshold for cyanogenic compounds, and the risk is entirely avoidable by coring the apple before serving.
How often can a crested gecko eat apples?
Once or twice per month is the practical upper limit. Apple's high sugar load and unfavorable Ca:P ratio mean that more frequent feeding can gradually undermine bone density and metabolic health. On feeding days, keep the portion to 1–2 teaspoons of mashed or diced flesh mixed into CGD paste.
Can juvenile crested geckos eat apples?
Juveniles under 6 months old should avoid apples or receive them only in very tiny amounts (a few millimeter-sized pieces) once per month at most. Hatchlings and young juveniles are in peak skeletal development and require an optimal calcium intake; the phosphorus in apples binds dietary calcium in the gut, which is particularly detrimental during this growth window.
Is unsweetened applesauce safe for crested geckos?
Plain, single-ingredient unsweetened applesauce eliminates the seed and skin hazards, making it marginally lower-risk than whole apple. However, even 'natural' commercial applesauce often contains concentrated fructose or citric acid. If using applesauce, verify the ingredient list is literally 'apples only,' keep the amount under half a teaspoon, and treat it with the same once-a-month frequency limit as fresh apple.
What fruits are nutritionally better for crested geckos than apples?
Fruits with a Ca:P ratio at or above 1:1 are preferred. Dried or fresh figs are excellent (Ca:P ~2.5:1), followed by papaya (~1.1:1), mango, and blackberries. These choices provide natural sugars alongside meaningful calcium contribution rather than competing with it. A full ranked list is available in the crested-gecko-fruits guide.
