Can Bearded Dragons Eat Sweet Potatoes? Safety, Prep & Frequency

Safe — OccasionallyFeeding frequency: monthly

Sweet potatoes are non-toxic for bearded dragons and provide beta-carotene, but their high oxalate content and unfavorable calcium-to-phosphorus ratio mean they should be offered no more than once or twice a month. Always serve raw, peeled, and diced — never cooked with seasoning.

How to Prepare

  1. Choose a fresh, firm sweet potato; avoid canned or pre-seasoned varieties which contain additives harmful to reptiles.
  2. Peel the skin completely — the skin concentrates oxalates and is harder for dragons to digest.
  3. Cut the flesh into pieces no larger than the space between the dragon's eyes (roughly 0.5 cm cubes for juveniles, 1 cm for adults) to prevent choking.
  4. Serve raw — cooking raises the glycemic load unnecessarily and softens texture, increasing the risk of impaction from gulping.
  5. Pair with high-calcium greens such as collard or mustard greens in the same salad bowl to partially offset the unfavorable Ca:P ratio.

FAQ

Can bearded dragons eat sweet potato skin?
No. The skin should always be removed before serving. It concentrates oxalates and is tougher to digest, raising impaction risk — especially in juveniles.
Can I feed cooked sweet potato to my bearded dragon?
It is safer to serve sweet potato raw. Cooking raises the sugar density and glycemic index, and any preparation involving butter, oil, or seasoning is outright toxic. If you choose to steam it plain, allow it to cool fully and serve only a small amount.
How much sweet potato can a bearded dragon eat in one sitting?
Limit the portion to roughly 2–3 small cubes (about a teaspoon of volume) mixed into a salad of staple greens. Sweet potato should never dominate the bowl — it is a garnish, not a staple.
Why does sweet potato's calcium-to-phosphorus ratio matter?
Bearded dragons require a dietary Ca:P ratio of at least 1.5:1 to absorb calcium efficiently. Foods with inverted ratios (more phosphorus than calcium) actively pull calcium from bones over time, contributing to metabolic bone disease. This is why sweet potato is an occasional treat, not a daily vegetable. See our full guide on the bearded-dragon-diet for a complete safe food list.
Are sweet potatoes safer than regular potatoes for bearded dragons?
Yes. Regular white potatoes contain solanine — a glycoalkaloid that is mildly toxic to reptiles — and should be avoided entirely. Sweet potatoes belong to a different plant family (Convolvulaceae) and contain no solanine, making them the safer choice, provided portion and frequency are controlled.
