Can Bearded Dragons Eat Fish? Safety, Prep & Frequency

Safe — OccasionallyFeeding frequency: never

Fish is not a suitable food for bearded dragons — raw fish contains thiaminase that destroys Vitamin B1, feeder fish carry dangerous parasites, and the phosphorus-to-calcium ratio actively undermines bone health. Even thoroughly cooked, plain fish offers little nutritional value compared to safer protein sources like dubia roaches or black soldier fly larvae.

How to Prepare

  1. If you choose to offer fish despite the risks, select only boneless, skinless white fish such as tilapia or cod — never oily fish like salmon or tuna, which have extreme phosphorus loads.
  2. Cook thoroughly with zero oil, salt, garlic, or seasoning of any kind; boiling or steaming is safest.
  3. Dice into pieces no larger than the space between the dragon's eyes, serve at room temperature, and remove every uneaten scrap within 20 minutes to prevent rapid bacterial growth.
  4. Do not offer feeder fish (goldfish, minnows, rosy reds) under any circumstances — they are high in thiaminase and chronically exposed to parasites in crowded feeder tanks.
  5. Follow any fish meal with at least a two-month gap, and monitor stool consistency for signs of GI upset or parasite load in the days after.

FAQ

Can bearded dragons eat feeder goldfish?
No. Feeder goldfish are one of the worst choices — they are high in thiaminase, heavily exposed to parasites in commercial feeder tanks, and provide a Ca:P ratio that actively depletes bone calcium. They should never be offered.
What happens if my bearded dragon accidentally eats a small piece of fish?
A single accidental exposure to a small amount of plain cooked fish is unlikely to cause immediate harm. Monitor for loose stools, lethargy, or loss of appetite over the next 48–72 hours. If symptoms appear or if raw fish was consumed, consult a reptile-experienced veterinarian promptly.
Is canned tuna or salmon safe for bearded dragons?
No. Canned fish is loaded with sodium, often contains added oils or seasonings, and tuna and salmon have some of the highest phosphorus levels among common fish. Both are unsuitable regardless of preparation.
What are better high-protein alternatives to fish?
Dubia roaches, black soldier fly larvae (BSFL/calci-worms), and hornworms all deliver comparable or superior protein with far safer Ca:P ratios and no thiaminase risk. Adult dragons can also receive occasional pinky mice as a protein treat — still infrequently, but a far safer choice than fish.
Do any reptile vets recommend fish for bearded dragons?
No mainstream reptile veterinary guidance recommends fish as a dietary item for bearded dragons. The Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians (ARAV) husbandry position emphasizes insect protein and leafy greens as the dietary backbone, with fish absent from recommended food lists.
